Everything You Need to Know About Getting a Neck Lift

Neck Lifts

As we get older, our skin begins to show our age by sagging and getting wrinkly. When this starts to happen, some people begin to look for ways to improve the appearance of their skin and look younger.

There are many different facial plastic surgery procedures that can accomplish this goal depending on what part of the face you want to improve. The neck area is a popular area that people want to improve.

What Is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift is a surgical procedure that helps to improve visible signs of aging in the neck and along the jawline. Some people may not want to go for a full facelift, but may still want to improve the way their neck and jawline look. A neck lift can be the perfect solution if you fall into this category.

What Issues Can a Neck Lift Improve?

A neck lift is a common go-to procedure for people who want to treat the following problems:

  • Excess fat and so-called “turkey neck” that can create jowls
  • Excess fat under the chin
  • Loose neck skin

While not everyone may be a good candidate for a neck lift, if you are experiencing any of these issues with the skin around your neck, a neck lift may be an option. Meeting with a plastic surgeon to discuss your options is your best bet.

What Can I Expect During a Neck Lift?

A neck lift is a surgical procedure, so you can expect to receive some type of anesthesia for the procedure and you should prepare to spend time recovering.

During the surgery, a small cut is made beneath the chin in a natural crease so it can’t be seen. The exact spot of the incision may vary among men and women due to men’s facial hair. The skin is then taken off of the underlying soft tissue and then re-draped. Any excess skin is removed to achieve tighter, younger-looking skin. The procedure can take anywhere from 2-5 hours. Once it’s over the incisions are wrapped in dressing to minimize swelling.

Results will vary from patient to patient. Those with good skin and a well-defined bone structure often have the most success. Sometimes after a neck lift, other procedures may be recommended to achieve the best look. These can include facial resurfacing, liposuction, and fat or chin augmentation.

What Type of Recovery Can I Expect?

Recovery time also differs from patient to patient, but typically lasts anywhere from 10-14 days. The post-op dressings will be removed 1-3 days after the surgery. Sleeping with your head elevated will minimize swelling and speed up your recovery.

What Should I Do to Prepare for a Neck Lift?

Your plastic surgeon will go over specific instructions, but generally, you can expect to stop smoking if you’re a smoker and avoid taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs that increase bleeding. You may also have to adjust medications you’re taking or may have to start taking certain medications in preparation.

Are Neck Lifts Safe?

Neck lifts are considered a safe procedure, but as with any surgery, there is always the risk of complications. Your plastic surgeon will discuss all of these with you so that you are fully aware before deciding to go ahead with your neck lift.

When considering a neck lift, be sure to do your homework as you choose your plastic surgeon. Make sure they are not only certified and licensed but can also provide you with before and after photos of their work. Referrals and positive reviews are also always a plus.

Does Insurance Cover Neck Lifts?

Since neck lifts are considered plastic surgery, most insurance companies will not cover it. Since you will be responsible for all payments, it’s important to ask what costs are included in the price of the surgery. Be sure to ask about anesthesia and post-op care.
