When you look in the mirror are you satisfied with the appearance of your skin? If you’re not, then it may be time to consider CO2 laser resurfacing. CO2 laser treatments have helped countless patients regain the youthful appearance of their skin.

What is CO2 laser treatment?

CO2 laser treatment is a resurfacing procedure that aims to enhance the skin tone of the face, neck, chest and other extremities. Carbon dioxide lasers are used to resurface the skin by removing a fine layer of the skin and heating it as well. When you decide you want to have a CO2 laser treatment and are deemed a good candidate, you will first begin using two topical treatments about two weeks before in order to enhance results. The procedure itself takes 30 minutes to an hour to complete. It can be done either under general anesthesia or conscious sedation. If you take Accutane for skin issues you will have to stop taking it at least six months before you undergo a laser treatment.

What are the benefits?

CO2 laser treatments can make you look younger and reduce wrinkles that can come with age, smoking, or heredity. It can also correct skin changes caused by acne or too much exposure to the sun.

What is the downtime associated with a CO2 laser treatment?

In order for a CO2 laser treatment to be effective, the deeper layers of the skin must be taken care of. It typically takes about a week for the skin to regenerate. You will be prescribed antibiotics and antivirals during this time to reduce the chance of infection. Your skin may appear pink for 3-6 weeks after the procedure. It’s important to protect your skin against the sun during your recovery time for optimal results. Your doctor will also instruct you on how to take care of your skin daily during your recovery.
