A ‘Zoom Boom’? Facial Cosmetic Treatments Surge

During the pandemic, people are using video call platforms such as Zoom to work from home and connect socially with family and friends. These up close and personal meetings are leading many people to analyze their facial features more than ever—and they’re deciding to fix the issues that make them self-conscious. Whether it’s BOTOX®, a facelift, or eyelid surgery, our Denver practice is treating patients who want to display a better version of themselves.

The so-called “Zoom boom,” prompted by the sudden shift to working from home, may linger indefinitely as employment experts predict many employees will work remotely even after the pandemic is over. We’re expecting that women and men will continue to seek aesthetic treatments to look more rested and youthful on video calls.

The nonsurgical and surgical procedures people are seeking include a wide range of treatments, but we’ll focus on some of the most common in this blog post.

Popular Treatments and Procedures

Injectables

Both women and men are coming in for wrinkle-reducing injectable procedures that include BOTOX, Dysport®, and dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM®. The best injectable treatment depends on the specific concern patients have. For example, men or women concerned about crow’s feet at the corners of their eyes or vertical worry lines benefit from BOTOX or Dysport injections. These treatments relax the muscles that create those lines. Fillers such as Restylane® Refyne restore volume to soften nasolabial folds and marionette lines around the mouth that appear more prominent on a computer screen.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Even the best lighting won’t camouflage dull skin tone or discoloration caused by years of sun exposure. Laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion resurface the skin to reveal a more glowing and youthful-looking appearance.

Eyelid Surgery

Upper and lower blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) procedures create remarkable transformations even though the results look natural. Many of the patients we see—both men and women—want to minimize the bags under their eyes and lift sagging upper eyelids. Incisions for both upper and lower eyelid surgery are easily concealed. For the upper eyelids, I make incisions in the lids’ natural creases. Lower eyelid procedures involve incisions inside the lid or concealed on the exterior of the eyelid. Notice the absence of scarring in these before-and-after photos of actual patients.

Facelift/Neck Lift

Faces typically don’t age in one area at a time, so I usually recommend combining a facelift with other rejuvenation procedures, including nonsurgical and surgical treatments. A facelift alone only addresses the lower two-thirds of the face, and the results may draw attention to areas around the eyes or forehead that will look older by comparison. Think of how dated a dining room may appear after updating the kitchen. You can get a better idea of this concept by viewing before-and-after photos featuring some of my actual patients.

Many people find that working from home offers a good opportunity to undergo facial plastic surgery. They need less time off to recover because they can still get some work accomplished without having to go into the office.

I also want to emphasize that choosing a plastic surgeon whose practice focuses exclusively on the face is important. Surgeons who are board-certified in facial plastic surgery have additional training in creating excellent results safely.
