Permanent Lip Enhancement Procedure vs. Temporary Filler: Which Is Right for Me?

Deciding on any type of plastic surgery is a big decision, especially facial plastic surgery because your face is the first thing someone sees when they look at you. That’s why you want to make sure you’re choosing the right type of procedure.

If you’re thinking of enhancing your lips, there are different routes to take depending on the result you’re hoping to achieve. Let’s take a look at why you may want to enhance the appearance of your lips and which type of procedure is right for you.

Permanent Lip Enhancement Procedure vs. Temporary Filler

Reasons for Lip Enhancement

Our skin and bodies are not resistant to aging, and that includes our lips. As we age, our lips may begin to shrink and lose their definition. This can lead to a sagging appearance around the lip line.

Even for those who are not seeing the signs of aging, lip enhancement can help if your lips were just never as full as you would have liked.

No matter which category you may fall into, you can choose a permanent lip enhancement procedure such as a lip lift or you can decide to get one of several different types of temporary fillers.

Lip Enhancement

Benefits of Permanent Lip Enhancement

Permanent lip enhancement such as lip lift surgery can help to reverse the sagging effect that aging can have on your lips. It can improve the appearance of the lips and smile by shortening the upper lip and turning the pink part of our lips outward. This results in more voluminous lips.

A lip lift can also give more volume to people whose lips are not as full as they want or who have a long space above their lip.

This type of procedure is done right in the plastic surgeon’s office under local anesthesia and usually takes less than one hour to complete. You can expect to eat only soft foods for the first couple of days and to take a couple of days off of work to recover. Swelling may take 1-2 weeks to go down, but after that, your lips will begin to heal and you will see the full results.

Unlike temporary fillers, the results of a lip lift are permanent, so you won’t need to make multiple visits to your plastic surgeon to keep up with the look you want. Since a lip lift is a surgery and a permanent change to your appearance, talk extensively with your facial plastic surgeon so that you are both on the same page.

Temporary Lip Fillers

Benefits of Temporary Lip Fillers

Temporary lip fillers fall under the umbrella of “lunchtime procedures” because they can be done in a short amount of time and can truly be done on your lunch break. There are many different types of lip filler products to choose from to help you get fuller-looking lips. Temporary lip fillers help to restore lost volume and add more definition to the lip line.

Temporary lip fillers are non-invasive and don’t require any downtime. You can simply schedule your appointment, walk into your plastic surgeon’s office, get your fillers and walk out in about 15 minutes. Some patients do experience swelling for about a week or so, but after that, you will see the true results.

Since this type of procedure is temporary, the effects will wear off. The length of time you see the effects of your lip filler will depend on the type of filler you choose. Typically, lip filler results last anywhere from 6 months to one year. After that time, it’s your decision whether you want to revisit your plastic surgeon for another lip injection to maintain the look you desire.

When deciding whether to get permanent lip enhancement or temporary lip fillers, you need to determine whether you want to revisit your surgeon for treatments like lip fillers require, or if you want to have one surgery to alter your appearance. For many, cost is a factor. Temporary lip fillers are less expensive than permanent lip enhancement procedures. But, the cost of multiple temporary lip fillers will begin to add up if you plan to maintain your look, so it’s important to keep that in mind as well.
