Denver, CO Facial Plastic Surgeon - Dr. Keith Ladner on the subject of Lip Augmentation, Facial Fillers, and Fat Transfer
As we age, we lose volume in the areas that we want it and gain volume in the areas that we don't want it. This is particularly true in the face. In addition to fat and volume loss, we lose collagen in our skin and the skin becomes less elastic. This can create hollowness around the eyes, deep creases around the mouth and chin, and extra skin along the jawline and neck. Fortunately, we have many options to combat these signs of aging, including surgical and non-surgical treatments.
Fillers, as they are named, do just that: they fill unwanted wrinkles and creases. Fillers come in all shapes and sizes. Depending on the desired treatment area, each particular filler carries its own set of advantages. By far, the hyaluronic acid fillers are the most commonly used. These include Juvéderm, Restylane, and Voluma. These fillers have gained popularity due to their ease of injection, their natural appearance, their consistency, and the ability to easily remove the filler for undesired effects. When used cautiously, Juvéderm can be used to fill just about any unwanted deep wrinkle or crease. The most common areas treated are the smile lines (melolabial folds), the lips for Lip Augmentation, and the hollowness beneath the eyes (tear troughs). Juvéderm typically lasts 9 months.
At Ladner Facial Plastic Surgery, we are excited to now offer Voluma. Voluma is a long-lasting filler similar to Juvéderm that became available to clinicians in the U.S. in November, 2013. Voluma can last up to 24 months due to a more stable structure of the injected material. Voluma is designed to provide long lasting, natural appearing augmentation to the cheek area. As opposed to Juvederm, it is not intended to fill in wrinkles and creases but is meant to provide volume to enhance the cheek structure.
If you are searching for a permanent solution, then fat transfer is the answer. Using the patient’s own fat sources, fat is harvested from the belly or thigh and can be used to volumize or fill any deficiencies in the face. If the patient is having another procedure at the same time, such as a facelift, the fat can be harvested from this site to avoid a second donor site. In most people the fat that is injected is permanent. Therefore, it is a cost-effective, long-lasting procedure to provide natural appearing volumization to the areas of the face where it is needed.
Dr. Ladner believes in tailoring the particular procedure to fit the individual patient’s needs and desires. Therefore, together with Dr. Ladner, the appropriate treatment plan will be made.
